EVALUATION OF CONTRACEPTIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF NORPLANT-2 IMPLANTS AND THE COPPER T380 IUD IN KOREANS

Abstract
|
|
|
This paper presents findings based on a two year, introductory clinical investigation concerning the safety, efficacy, and acceptability of the new contraceptive Norplant-2 implants in Korea.
1. The study is based in 196 acceptors of the implants at five clinic 68.8 percent of the women were age 25 to 34 year old. The mean of living child was 1.8 and the mean of induced abortion was 1.9, 71.9 percent of the acceptors did not want to have another child.
2. The contraceptive effectiveness of the Norplant-2 was 99.5 %, 195 out of 196, during a mean observation period of 16.6 woman-months. This effectiveness was as good as that of the IUD in this study, which was 199 out of 200 with a mean observation of 10.9 woman-months.
3. The survial of Norplant-2 implants in the Korean sample was plotted to be 60 % at 12 months and 51 % at 30 months.
4. The Most common and serious complication which led to removal of Norplant
2 implants was menstrual trouble, constituing 87 % of the total 93 removed acceptors.
5. The most common complaints of Norplant-2 acceptors were bleeding(56.1 %),
amenorrhea(21.4 %), body weight change(24.0 %), gastrointestinal problems(14.3 %) and others.
6. Among 45 Norplant-2 acceptors who complained of weight gain, only one resulted in removal of the implant.
7. Prospective users should receive complete information about the change in menstrual pattern associated with Norplant-2 implants.
8. With adequate training and supervision, delivery and removal of implants can be done quickly and safely, as indicated by the low infection rates(2 per 100 women) in this study.
9. No serious sequelae have been associated with improper placement or removal of implants.
The long duration of action, and convenience to use. Norplant-2 implant are effective and acceptable method.
